50 Years of the Kings Trust

2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the Kings Trust…or Princes Youth Business Trust (PYBT) as we knew it back in the day.

Early days

As recent art college graduates with lots of passion and energy but little financial resources, we applied to PYBT for funding to establish our studio. On the strength of our application and business plans, we were both awarded a generous grant which pooled together, afforded us two brand new Shimpo wheels and a shiny top loading kiln.

Two shimpo potter's wheels at eastnor pottery. The wheels are positioned either side of an old brown interior door. There is also a silver stereo cassette player on a table infront of the potter's wheel on the left
Jon Williams and sarah monk opening the door of their studio in eastnor for the very first time. Sarah, in a pink jacket is looking at the camera whilst jon who is opening the door is smiling at sarah. Its a warm sumnny day and there are yellow flowers in bloom in the flower border

Business expansion

Later on, when we were considering offering courses and workshops from our Herefordshire studio, we approached the Trust again, securing a low interest loan to purchase extra potter’s wheels.

Money isn’t everything

Not only did we receive financial aid, any assistance from the Trust came with a package of business advise, mentoring and other amazing opportunities. In 1994 we were offered shell space at the Autumn International Gift Fair at Birmingham NEC. The stands were heavily discounted and PYBT businesses, some 250 of them, had their own dedicated pavilion. What an amazing opportunity! Not only did we secure some lucrative orders and exhibitions, Sarah won a gold medal for her toast-rack presented by none other than the then the future king himself.

Torso and head of two figures stood in profile and shaking hands. The figure on the left is HRH king Charles and the figure on the right is Sarah Monk in a red shirt. Sarah is holding her gold medal in her left hand having just been presented to her by the king or the prince of Wales as he was known back in 1994

Thank you The Kings Trust

Although we would have set up as artists with or without the help of PYBT, there is no doubt in our minds, without the considerable generosity of the Trust, it would have taken a lot longer to get there. For this reason we are absolutely indebted to the Kings Trust and are so grateful for the help so early on in our careers. Long live the King’s Trust!
