Did you know that clay is infinitely recyclable? It’s been on the earth some 66 million years drying out and re-hydrating unchanged in nature. It’s only when it’s fired in the kiln it makes an irreversible change. Pottery or ceramic is probably one of the most permanent and durable materials known to man. Once they are out the kiln, they are out there forever!

It’s one of the reasons we ask our one day and weekend potter’s wheel course participants to be selective of their freshly made booty. At the end of the workshop, participants get to choose up to three creations to be fired and glazed. Surplus pots are ceremonially plucked from their resting places for recycling.

Must say it’s not very often we get such a neat pile of rejected pots! #neatlyfolded

Turns out agricultural recruitment agents make for brilliant potters too!

As well as creating some mighty fine pots on the wheel, the group made a magnificent collaborative piece decorated in an agricultural style with modeled sheep, wheat and farmers!

The individual pots made on the potter’s wheel came alive in the last hour of the workshop as participants used their imagination and coloured underglazes to great effect.

Here’s what lead contact Caroline thought of the activity:

“I just wanted to drop you an email to thank you for hosting the team yesterday – everyone had a fantastic time. Judging by the chatter in the office this morning, I think we even have a few who are eager to have another crack at it!

The set up you guys have down there is really impressive and especially the way you were able to lead the group through the process so everyone progressed at the same rate – it was all just really well put together, and all in all a great day out for the team.”

Thanks Caroline :)

How we miss those force 10 gusts and torrential downpours of a week ago!!!!

Despite the challenging conditions we had a ball and met some pretty fab people and aspiring potter’s.

Well done indeed to everybody who made it to the potting tent. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with you all. Such a lovely, family friendly event!

More festival pics right here.

@lakefestuk 2020 takes place 13th – 16th August.

jug made by eastnor pottery course participant nicci

We’ve been running workshops here at Eastnor Pottery and out in the wider community for 25 years. Safe to say, we’ve introduced tens of thousands of people to the delights of working with clay. Some of whom have proper ‘got the bug’, purchased a wheel and have never looked back.

Nicci is one such recent convert to the clay.

Having attended a couple of our weekend potter’s wheel courses earlier in the year she’s  purchased a W&K and attending a weekly course at her local college. She’s engaging with the squidgy stuff daily and sampling all kinds of wheel based making techniques on her course.

Here are a few results from an exploration into the world of jug making.
