A hands-on Potter’s Wheel introduction

Making a pot on the potter’s wheel is one of those ‘always wanted to do’ activities. This incredibly enjoyable 90-minute experience offers the opportunity to do just that. Participants share a potter’s wheel, one between two, making it just perfect for small groups and couples. Individuals are most welcome too – many friendships have been forged sharing a wheel at Eastnor Pottery.

You get two goes each and definitely won’t be bored waiting your turn. It’s a fantastic spectator sport, in fact, you learn more watching your potting partner than when sitting at the wheel yourself.

What You’ll Do

On Arrival

You are guaranteed a warm welcome from your hosts, celebrated studio potters Sarah Monk and Jon Williams.

Professional Demo

It’s a gentle start and once you’re ‘apronned up’ and seated, you’ll be treated to an informative and entertaining demonstration. We explain the process in five, easy to understand steps…then it’s down to business!

Throw Down Time

We move through the five steps altogether, as a group, advancing only to the next stage when everybody’s in a good place. You get two goes each and we encourage you to swap over in between goes. Remember, the watching is just as important, if not more than, the making.

Finishing Up

At the close of the session, choose to recycle your pots; air-dry your favourite at home or have your creation fired and glazed (see FAQ for details)

Frequently Asked Questions

The clay washes out and doesn’t stain but we always recommend clothes and footwear you don’t mind getting splattered.

An apron and old towel/tea towel for drying hands and wheel head. Alternatively, you can hire an apron & towel bundle on the day for £5

Maximum of x16 participants per session allowing for plenty of individual guidance and attention.

This course is designed for adults and young people 16 yrs +

You’ll be so engrossed you won’t be able to consider anything other than the spinning wet clay in your hand. For those seeking pre or post pottery refreshment, there is an open-air café in the village a 5 minute walk from the Pottery.

At the end of the session you may (or may not!) have two pots to show for your efforts. You have three choices:

  • Recycle your pots so the clay can be enjoyed again and again by our lovely customers.
  • Choose your favourite pot to take home and air-dry.
  • Have your creation fired and glazed for an additional £20. If you can’t collect it from the studio, you may need to consider P+P at £5 per pot.

This was such good fun! We only did a short session but I’d love to go back for more and get some more experience on the wheel. Our hosts were very welcoming and explained how to throw a pot very clearly and well. Highly recommended.
