Relax, Unwind and Discover Your Inner Potter
This is our most immersive and creative potter’s wheel experience, enabling participants to produce thrown pottery to an extremely high quality and colourful finish. Small group sizes ensure plenty of individual attention and personalised learning. Informative demonstrations, a nurturing environment and friendly, positive tuition – our weekenders learn so much and have the best time ever.
What You’ll Do
On Arrival
You are guaranteed a warm welcome from your hosts, celebrated studio potters Sarah Monk and Jon Williams.
Day 1
Is all about the glorious mud as you grapple with lumps of spinning, wet clay. You’ll be treated to demonstrations, an inexhaustible supply of clay and endless opportunities to play and experiment. You’ll sleep well after day one!
Day 2
On day 2 you get to refine and paint your creations made the previous day. Your shapes and vessels will have dried overnight to what’s called ‘leather hard’ state. You’ll then be able to pop them back onto the wheel for trimming and turning. We also show you how to add handles, make foot-rings and apply colour to your wares.
Finishing Up
At the close you’ll select your favourite pots to be fired, glazed and posted out to you. Marvel at your creativity and professional finish when your creations land approx. one month later.

Everything about the weekend was great. Jon and Sarah are welcoming, hospitable, chilled and helpfully patient….The venue is idyllic, in a beautiful rural setting. I’d recommend their courses to anyone wanting to try throwing for the first time or wanting to develop their skills. I certainly am keen to return.

What a lovely weekend! I braved a solo trip for this course and felt welcome and part of the group from the outset. I’m looking forward to receiving my three finished pieces once they have been fired. All being well I have two useable mugs and a bowl to show for my weekend. For the weekend course each potter has their own wheel, a very generous amount of clay to work with (you’re not going to run out) and the perfect combination of instruction, demonstration, support and freedom to find what works for you. Up to the point of adding colour the clay is completely recyclable so you can afford to experiment and make mistakes. It’s great to see that resources aren’t being wasted.
Whilst I am generally quite crafty, I am not necessarily artistic and I’m definitely very heavy handed. Pottery did not come naturally to me and I definitely felt that I was significantly behind my fellow potters. Jon & Sarah and all of the other potters were supportive and encouraging. At the end of the weekend I lined up my finished pieces to take a photo before heading off, without everyone else’s work to compare against I suddenly had a real sense of achievement.
Definitely go on this course. Go with the intention of experiencing something new in a really friendly and supportive environment. If you can, don’t compare your work to everyone else’s. Perhaps you’ll be amazing at it, perhaps you’ll be terrible but have a good chuckle at your mistakes, you’ll probably reach a new found respect for the Pottery Showdown contestants either way!Ali M
