Potter’s Wheel Day Course
6 hours
£180 per person
Immerse Yourself in The Potter’s Wheel
Escape to the country and spend a whole day learning how to make pottery on the potter’s wheel. Your own potter’s wheel and an inexhaustible amount of clay to play with. We’ll have you throwing respectable shapes by lunchtime – guaranteed.
What You’ll Do
On Arrival
You are guaranteed a warm welcome from your hosts, celebrated studio potters Sarah Monk and Jon Williams.
Professional Demo
After introductions and refreshments, you’ll settle down to watch a detailed and entertaining potter’s wheel demonstration. Then it’s aprons on and time to ‘saddle up’!
Throw Down Time
We have developed an easy to understand, five step process to making a pot on the potter’s wheel and for the first two or three attempts, we move through the stages altogether as a group. By the third go, participants have pretty much got the hang of things and are encouraged to develop at their own pace with individual tutoring as and when required. In the afternoon we scale up, make bigger pots and try different shapes.
Finishing Up
At the end of the day and after the wheels have been cleaned it’s decision time! You’ll have made loads and loads of pots, far more than you’ll ever need. We ask you to select your favourite one or two to keep as a memento. They will be left with us to be fired, glazed and posted out to you at no extra cost. If you can’t make up your mind what to keep, extra pots can be purchased on the day for an additional fee. Your glazed gems will arrive at home approx six weeks later.

We had such a wonderful day at Eastnor Pottery learning how to throw pots. We had no prior experience, but Jon and Sarah soon put everyone at ease (we were a group of 8). It’s such a warm, cosy and friendly environment to explore some new creative skills. After some demonstrations and introductory guidance, we were soon sat at our individual wheels, trying out our first pots. Jon and Sarah and their helper Ellie were really helpful, answering questions, and offering advice as we tried to get the hang of things. You can go at your own pace, but most people managed to make around 10 pots. You can choose a few of your best attempts to be fired, and delivered to you a few weeks afterwards. We had a really friendly and fun day, highly recommended if you want to try something creative and new!

A brilliant day that I would recommend to anyone – on your own or as a group…With my own wheel / space to work throughout the day, fantastic demonstrations and guidance as we progressed, and as much clay as I wanted to practice with (I had a LOT of ‘learning pots’), I was able to work at my own pace….Worth every penny and I am now positively potty about playing with clay.
