As a child Jon loved drawing and messing about with clay in the garden. At the age of 15 he encountered the head of his local art-school and in a blinding revelation, realised that ‘art’ could be a job!. He studied in Swindon & then Bath, his experience culminating in a 1st class degree in ceramics and 3d design. He also met his future wife and fellow potter Sarah Monk at Bath. The pair set up Eastnor Pottery in 1994 and to this day, co-direct the creativity and ceramic exploration from their Herefordshire base.
Clay is a fantastic medium. No matter how slight the interaction everyone can make their mark. Jon loves this attribute of clay and aspires to make fired, ceramic objects that incorporate similar notions of engagement. He produces pottery designed to be handled, shaken or struck.
More recently, and in an attempt to add further layers of interaction, he’s been collaborating with digital technologists and sound artists. Current ceramic pieces are just as likely to incorporate mini speakers, wires and micro chips.
