Time spent in the company of a professional ceramic artist provides an excellent opportunity for GCSE Art students to enhance their understanding of the creative industries and baluster their portfolio.
The Benefits
Ceramic artists
Jon ‘the potter’ Williams and Sarah Monk have a combined experience of over 60 years working in the creative industries. Their artwork has been exhibited widely in the UK and abroad and is represented in several important collections.
Individual creativity
Clay is a fantastic, versatile material for expressing ideas in three dimensions. Students develop their own ideas and creativity and grow as individuals.
Visual language
Students develop an understanding of aesthetics and visual terms when they work with clay. The language of three-dimensional design, texture and surface pattern is an inextricable element of the tuition. Teaching staff often comment on students using their new-found, creative vocabulary in other subjects.
New skills
Workshops often include working on the potter’s wheel. This is usually a first-time experience for students and a great opportunity to learn a new skill.
Knowledge
Clay is a fascinating natural material, used by man for as long as civilisation has existed. Students enjoy learning about the science and historical importance of clay and ceramic technology.
Articulate
Even when students are developing individual pieces, we encourage feedback and positive criticism. Workshop participants are encouraged to talk about their ideas and concepts both to peers and staff in group or individually.
Collaborate
Young people often get to work on a collaborative piece. Working towards a common goal has a myriad of benefits. Individual contributions are admired and everybody has a shared sense of achievement and ownership in the final outcome.
Self esteem
There are no mistakes working with soft clay, just loads of learning opportunities. The positive nature of the tuition installs confidence and raises self esteem.
