The Great Pottery Throw Down makes a welcome return to Channel 4 at 7.45 pm on Sunday 7th January 2024. Hurrah!

In the past, the airing of the program heralds a surge of public interest in pottery, many of whom are inspired to visit us to make a pot on the potter’s wheel for the very first time.

Here are a few more reasons why so many newbie potters are beating a path to our door.

The potter’s wheel is very mindful. To craft a ‘good pot,’ one must focus entirely on the task at hand, leaving little room for distraction. When you are sat at the wheel, the hustle and bustle of daily life fade away, replaced by a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Under proper guidance, throwing a pot is a skill easily acquired in a relative short period. We offer a 90-minute Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel Class, maintaining its the perfect amount of time for participants to grasp the basics.

Engaging in an activity with others often enhances the overall enjoyment. We currently host up to x14 participants at a time on our Intro Class, enabling individuals and couples to bond over the creative process. Sometimes these sessions take on a party vibe, everybody sharing the experience and creating lasting connections.

The ‘first time’ is always memorable, and physically crafting something with your own hands reinforces that memory. The sense of accomplishment derived from fashioning your own pot, flaws and all, is undeniable. We create so many happy memories for our customers.

Above all, working with the potter’s wheel is an incredibly fun thing to do. Few things are as amusing as witnessing a friend or loved one grapple with a lump of wet, spinning mud! The resounding laughter at our studio on a busy Saturday is truly life-affirming.

If you’re interested in experiencing the joys of throwing clay on the potter’s wheel, please consider our popular Introduction to the Potter’s Wheel Class. For a more immersive experience, our weekend and one-day Potter’s Wheel Courses might be just what you’re looking for.

It’s black & white, our Weekend Potter’s Wheel Courses are brilliant!

These minimally decorated beauties were made by Emily, a recent participant on our two day potter’s wheel extravaganza.

As well as sampling a myriad of making techniques, you can choose to decorate your thrown and trimmed masterpieces from an extensive palette of colour….and many guests do, relishing in the rainbow effect.

Others enjoy colour matching their work to their homes.

Emily opted for the simplicity of bold, black, underglaze brushstrokes over a creamy white slip….and we love ‘em!
